Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles refuse to work. It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. It kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis, and it has no cure. Do you enjoy helping people? Are you looking for a volunteering role where you can do just that, and which fits in around your family, studies or other commitments? Motor Neurone Disease Association is looking for volunteers to join us in making a real difference to the lives of local people that are affected by MND. If you feel you have the time and skills and want to help your local community, please do get in touch. As a volunteer, you will be matched to service users across Tower Hamlets and visit people in their own homes. You will: • offer emotional support to people living with and affected by MND • provide information to people living with MND, their carers and families • help people living with MND make informed choices • help people to access appropriate services / support • explain how the MND Association can support people living with MND, their carers and families • record information, following the MND Association guidelines and local protocols • develop and maintain relationships with our local Branch or Group • attend support and supervision meetings, as well as development events. You’ll be inducted into the role and informed about the MND Association. As part of this, you will receive training and mentoring.
For this role you need to be able to work as part of a team, liaise with health and social care professionals, and have the ability to develop and maintain supportive relationships. You will also need to be non-judgmental and have a respectful attitude.
Flexibility, hours that suit you! Become part of a friendly and dedicated team. Make a positive impact of the lives of people affected with and by MND. Access to a range of workshops and events. Thorough induction and ongoing support from the Area Support Co-ordinator.
The time required is flexible, but we expect volunteers to commit to a minimum of 2-4 hours per week. Visits can take place at times that are mutually convenient for the volunteer and service user.
