Role Detail

Description

If you care about climate change, and want to work with children, this role with Climate Ed could be perfect for you. As a volunteer, you will go into a primary school in London to deliver workshops about climate change/carbon footprints and inspire young children to start taking action on climate change. More specifically, this role involves: - Undertaking short training to gain familiarity with the workshop materials (this can be done remotely). - Delivering a programme of workshops (five in total, each lasting one hour, spread over 5 weeks) during school hours. The timings of your workshop will be agreed between you and the school. You won't manage the students alone - the teacher remains with you the whole time. - Supporting children with activities related to the workshop, like producing board displays in their school. - Providing feedback to Climate Ed about the effectiveness of the programme. We are currently developing partnerships with schools in Tower Hamlets. In the meantime you will complete your training and observe an experienced volunteer delivering a workshop in a nearby borough. Climate Ed work in schools in other London boroughs (Southwark, Merton, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Westminster and Croydon) so you can start volunteering there if you would prefer to start sooner. Ideally you will be able to run 2 workshop programmes per academic year (total of 10 x 1 hour workshops).

Why these skills are required

We are looking for: - People who have previous experience, either as teachers or workshop facilitators, ideally (but not necessarily) with young people. - People who are knowledgeable about climate change (and related environmental/sustainability issues), keen to share their knowledge with others, and who are able to inspire children to motivate their families to reduce their carbon footprints. - People who enjoy interacting with young children and answering their questions. We are building our network of partner schools but often volunteers have their own links to schools. If you want to volunteer and know a school that might be interested, then you would be very welcome to promote the programme to that school. We require volunteers to be aged 18 or over. Climate Ed has a robust safeguarding policy and all volunteers are thoroughly vetted and require a enhanced DBS check (criminal record check). You must be fluent in English as all materials and the training are in English.

What is in it for you

You will gain many things from this experience: - A chance to develop teaching and facilitation skills, and science communication skills. - A chance to develop your own knowledge about climate change. - A chance to play your part in addressing the biggest challenge of the 21st century. - A chance to have fun (the programme is full of fun and laughter) and to be part of a nice, committed team of people.

Time Commitment

Ideally you will be able to run 2 workshop programmes per academic year (total of 10 x 1 hour workshops). You will need to be available during primary school hours.
