Role Detail

Description

XLP recruits and trains mentors from the local community to be matched with young people. Young people are referred to the programme by schools, pupil referral units, youth services, or the police. Mentors and mentees commit to meeting up for two hours each week for a minimum of 12 months, and an experienced youth worker assigned to each borough supports the mentor, mentee, and the family throughout the process. Mentors a reimbursed payments while mentoring and are invited to trips and events as well as training.

Why these skills are required

Being able to listen to, communicate with and inspire young people aged 11-18yrs. Only mentor one young person at a time. Negotiation is quite general with young people.

What is in it for you

Mentors feedback that their time mentoring has made them grow in many areas. Mentors have stated that they really enjoyed the experience, seeing their young person progress, seeing themselves progress. Improved listening and communication skills as well as better understanding of how things are for young people today and better understanding of self.

Time Commitment

We ask mentors to meet with mentees once a week or bi-weekly for 1-2hrs. In some cases there may be longer times due o special events or trips.
