We want to record the experiences of people who took part in or have memories of the music venues and scenes in Newham from 1965 to today. This would include recording audio interviews with musicians, DJ’s, record shop owners, party-goers, local residents, etc. We’re expecting each volunteer to record up to 4 interviews. Full training in oral history techniques and using recording equipment will be given to Oral History Society standards. We will also train volunteers to transcribe and provide written summaries of the interviews.
Oral History Interviewers are good listeners who are interested in people, have an ear for detail and who are confident in steering a conversation to the relevant subjects. You should be able to travel around east London and be comfortable in learning how to use recording equipment and how to record some interviews online. Some flexibility with your time to fit around your interviewees’ schedules will be needed, and preferably some availability during weekday daytimes. Transcription requires good written English, attention to detail and access to a home computer connected to the internet.

Oral history interviews will take place from August 2024 to May 2025 The first Oral History training session is planned for Wednesday 31st July 2024 (daytime) Expected time: average of 4 hours per month depending on available interviewees with additional time if you volunteer to transcribe interviews as well
