Description

This position will research the early life of Victorian explorer and writer Sir Richard Francis Burton. As a history research volunteer, your work will inform the ongoing interpretation of a unique heritage site in south London. Aims and objectives: • Develop a research plan to find out more about the early life of Sir Richard Francis Burton; • Carry out primary and secondary research using materials found online and in local heritage study spaces; • Produce a report telling the story of Sir Richard Francis’ early life that preceded his career as a prolific writer and international traveller. This research will inform a crucial aspect of our wider research and interpretation project at the Burton Mausoleum, Mortlake. You will be contributing to "Burton: Exploring Without Boundaries", a National Lottery Heritage Funded project. --- How to Apply: To apply, please send a short sample of your previous research to Caitlin Jones, Burton Project Manager caitlin@habitatsandheritage.org.uk. About you (desirable skills and experience) • Interest in local heritage and public history • Enthusiasm for telling unique stories and being open to new approaches to established narratives; • Experience conducting independent research using primary/secondary sources both online and in archives; • Experience writing for academic and/or public audiences; • Eagerness to learn; • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Time Commitment

Flexible hours but we suggest an average of 4 hours per week for a period of 3-6 months. Our team can offer support on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, but you can complete any remote work at times convenient for you!
