Role Detail

Description

No Panic is a national charity at the frontline of accessible help for anxiety sufferers. The No Panic Helpline is open 365 days a year between 10am and 10pm. Those who call us can be struggling across a range of anxiety disorders: OCD; Panic Attacks; Phobias or General Anxiety Disorder. We train our helpline volunteers to provide sufferers with all the information they need to begin the process of self-help recovery. This is a remote volunteering opportunity where everything is done from home, including training, and there is never a need to attend elsewhere. This makes it the ideal opportunity for those with mobility or fitness issues. All we ask is for volunteers to work a 3-hour shift once a week. Initial training is 1 hour a week for 8 weeks (for a small charge of £25 to cover costs), support is one-to-one for 6 weeks then monthly support groups.

What skills are required for this role

Why these skills are required

Being a helpliner with No Panic and working with those at their most vulnerable is a very special privilege. Not everyone can do this. You will need: • An interest in anxiety disorders; • To be able to provide empathetic listening; • To be able to pass on information of relevant No Panic’s services; • To be able to communicate clearly and effectively. We train all our volunteers to provide sufferers with the information they need. Initial training lasts for 8 weeks and continued support is given via bi monthly support groups. All training, support and volunteering is done over the phone. Due to our time investment and expense of training volunteers we do ask for a small fee of £25.

What is in it for you

If you have suffered from anxiety yourself and want to give something back then working on our helpline can be very fulfilling. It can also be of great benefit if you are a psychology student or counsellor - after one year, we will provide you with certification setting out the training you have been given and the service you have provided to No Panic. If you are already working in the field of mental health, this may increase your experience and knowledge, since we receive calls from a wide range of people suffering from a wide range of disorders. Our volunteers can go on to be trained to become mentors helping those with the most difficult of conditions.

Time Commitment

All we ask is that you are able to do one three-hour shift per week at a time to suits you.
