Hackney Night Shelter is an independent charity committed to supporting routes out of homelessness. For individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Our main shelter located on Well Street is a 20-bed facility for men and women with low needs. Our women’s shelter provides accommodation for 6 female guests and operates with a less formal structure but also serves as temporary emergency accommodation. We offer up to 28 days emergency accommodation including a bed, breakfast and dinner and a safe place to work on a longer-time move on plan with an external caseworker. Our guests are referred into the shelter from external homeless services. Supporting the Shelter Coordinator and Support Worker with the day-to-day administrative and practical tasks to related to guest stays. Key tasks involve: • Help with updating and organising guest records – database, support plan, etc. • Help with extension letters and other guest correspondence. • Help track start and end dates, and related actions. • Keep floorplan with guest names up to date, along with physical chalkboards. • Help with prepping rooms for new guests (linens, cleaning). • Supporting with organisation of guest referrals. • Prepare written materials for guest inductions. • Liaise with Refugee Employability Programme for guest drop-ins. Key tasks involve: • Support Volunteer Coordinator in developing bespoke communications to celebrate active and long-term volunteers, as well as re-engage inactive volunteers e.g. milestone/thank you cards. • Support Volunteer Coordinator in organizing volunteer celebration and training events. • Track volunteer engagement on Volunteer Database. • Add information provided by new volunteers onto Volunteer Database. • Data cleaning and management of volunteer data, in line with GDPR.
- Good handwriting and typed communication. - Basic understanding of Excel & Word. - Data entry. - Physically able to change a bed, do light housekeeping.
- Learn about the landscape of homelessness in London and across the UK, from staff and members of our community with extensive experience in the sector. - Opportunity to learn from other staff and attend staff/volunteer training events. - Refreshments & snacks provided on shift. - Monthly supervision with Volunteer Coordinator.
3 hours per week minimum. Required to be on a weekday during the hours of 11am - 5:30pm, for 3 months ideally. Day/time is flexible and could be divided between multiple days.
