Description

Since 2010 our Storehouse food bank and soup kitchen have served over 38,500 free meals to local people in Hackney needing food support from the homeless, families, single parent households, the unemployed and anyone who are economically disadvantage. The food we provide comes through donations from three Tesco stores, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Getir and cooked food from three local Caribbean restaurants. There are three main volunteering roles 1: Kitchen. Volunteers will be preparing the cooked food that comes in from the Caribbean restaurants by sorting and separating the variety of food from curry goat, curry chicken, jerk chicken, rice and peas, vegetables etc into individual food containers from the kitchen which will be given to our service users. There will be general cleaning, tidying, washing utensils and keeping the kitchen in a hygienic condition. Volunteers will need to arrive for 10.30am to 12.30pm Sundays only. 2: Food bank. Volunteers will be setting up and arranging tables in position in the hall to put the food on them which range from long life milk, tinned food, fruit and Vegetables, cereals, the Caribbean food, toiletries and much more. Your role would also involved bagging up the food parcels and serving our service users. There will be general cleaning, tidying up involved at the end. Volunteers will need to arrive for 10.30am to 12.30pm Sundays only. 3: Volunteer Drivers. Volunteer drivers are needed from 10.00am Sundays to collect food donations from different supermarket stores and Caribbean restaurants located in Hackney and Bethnal Green. We will provide all our volunteer drivers with our (Storehouse Volunteer badge) to be warn and shown when making food collections. Volunteers will have access to go in the stores to collect the food even when the stores are closed to the public once they present their volunteer badge to the staff where the food is being collected from. The volunteer drivers will know by Saturday evening where they will be going to collect the food for the Sunday morning. Once the food is collected it will be than brought to the hall to be sorted and the driver can stay to give out the food to our service users. Storehouse also offer volunteering opportunities for young people ages 14-24 in supporting and assisting them with their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Time Commitment

10.30am to 12.30pm on Sundays food bank volunteers are needed and volunteer food collection drivers from 10am Sundays. Volunteers will have the opportunity to join our volunteer whatsapp group and give us dates per month when they think they will be available to volunteer.
