Description

We are currently recruiting volunteer buddies, who will be matched with families, or individuals, to support them in the simple everyday life stuff. This role is about sharing knowledge, supporting people with daily tasks and creating friendship. The levels of English spoken varies between family’s and even between the family members, so naturally there will be an element of practicing English in this role. It is beneficial for the volunteer to be able to practice the English they are learning in college, in an informal relaxed environment.

Why these skills are required

We are looking for volunteers from a range of backgrounds, to create a diverse creative team of volunteers. - This role is ideally for people who live in Greenwich or can easily travel to their family’s house/area. - We are looking for people with a basic understanding of the needs and challenges of refugees and who are passionate about supporting and welcoming refugees in Greenwich. - As this role involves visiting the houses of the refugee families you are required to provide references and complete a background (DBS) check.

What is in it for you

Training You will receive an induction and training for your role and basic safeguarding training. There will be opportunity to attend additional training or events throughout the year. If you are looking to develop a certain skill or gain specific experience your dedicated volunteer coordinator will develop a plan with you. Social events and day trips We hope as the project develops, we will be able to host and organise day trips and social events. However, currently we do not have the funds to reimburse volunteers who want to take their families on day trips out of Greenwich. If you would like to be involved in fundraising for trips and events, please let us know. Volunteer Support - This project has a dedicated volunteer coordinator who will support you throughout your volunteering. - We host various volunteer events and socials throughout the year. - You can claim volunteer expenses for travelling to your family’s house.

Time Commitment

At least 1 hour a week with your family, not including travel to and from your family’s house.You will make your own arrangements to visit your family/family member. We need volunteer befrienders that can be with us for 3-6 months
