After full training, you would be the Editor of an edition once every four weeks. You’d prepare a presenter’s script and compile other content, while sub editors select and edit news items from various local papers. You would attend the evening recording session with four readers and an engineer, ensuring everyone has the correct material, and that the session progresses smoothly. We’re looking for someone comfortable with administration, written English, and taking responsibility. Supervisory experience would be a bonus but not essential, as you’d be working with willing volunteers. It involves a minimum of one morning and one evening, plus some preparation time, once every four weeks.
We don’t ask for any specific qualifications or experience, but editors need a good understanding of written English, and the ability to organise paperwork. Some supervisory experience would be an advantage but is not essential. You would have overall responsibility for the edition, working with three sub editors at the morning session, and four readers & an engineer in the evening.
As Editor you’d have the satisfaction of seeing a tangible end result, with your own personal touch, a recording of the news sent out to listeners. We hear frequently from blind listeners about the importance of the talking news to them, keeping them in touch with local news and social events. Training and guidance will be given for as long as the individual requires. This will include attendance at recording sessions in the studio. The role involves working with a friendly team, often discussing points with other editors and the readers. The organisation comprises many other roles including presenters, readers, office workers, post sorters, and recording engineers. Volunteers can, and often do, choose to take on several roles. Every six months the sixteen editors meet to exchange views and ideas, and to get to know anyone you haven’t worked with yet. Each February there’s a lunch for volunteers and guests, attended by about 80 people. In October there’s a brief annual general meeting followed by tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes, which is an opportunity to meet volunteers from other teams, and some of our listeners.
