Community cafe activities and advice

Commonside Community Development Trust

This volunteer role is for friendly, helpful people who can put customers at ease in our community cafe and help them to find the support they need, to expand their group of friends or engage with other services that can hlep.

Detailed Description

Attending one or more of our 10am - 2pm community cafe sessions in the New Horizon Centre you will help us provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere to all who pop in. The community cafe is open to anyone and takes payments according to what the customer is able to pay. This role is not in the kitchen, it is in the seated area, welcoming and chatting to customers and running or offering to run or provide activities such as board games, jigsaws, signposting to advice, explaining about other local servicse or just general making conversation and getting to know our customers well.

Why these skills are required

We are looking for people who work well with other people and have good interpersonal skills. Outgoing personalities will help but introverts who are confident about their skills will find it enjoyable too. Some basic IT and research skills will help us to help customers to find information, language skills may help with customers whose first language is not English, and if you are diplomatic and good at negotiating, that will be a help too! But equally, if you are really good at runninig fun quizzes, that will be fine.

You will gain confidence and develop your skills as well as meeting some real characters, making new friends and learning more about the local area. Money Guiders on-line training (accredited) from Money and Pensions Service (government service) Fuel Poverty literacy training from Merton's Warm and Well programme. Mental Health 1st Aid training - one day course other free training can be offered eg Food Hygiene, Health and Safety, working with vulnerable adults, safeguarding

Time Commitment

The cafe runs 10am - 2pm Monday - Friday. You can opt for one or more shift depending what you want to commit to. We also have a late afternoon cafe on Tuesday (4pm - 6pm) and Saturday mornings (9.30am - 1pm) if these time slots will suit you better. If you are superconfident and want to run a new cafe session, for example in the afternoon, that would be fine too.

Buses 152, 463, 60 and 255 stop outside the New Horizon Centre at the 'Pollards Hill Library' stop. 118 (from Morden to Brixton) stops at Northborough Road. Nearest tram stop is Beddington Lane (then 463 bus). Train stations: Streatham Common (then 118 or 60), Norbury (then 255).
