Mentor - Supported Volunteering programme

Volunteer Mentors are required to provide support for clients with learning disabilities to take part in volunteering opportunities.

Detailed Description

Volunteer Mentors are required to provide support for clients with learning disabilities to take part in volunteering opportunities. Full training, including a L2 accredited qualification in Mentoring, will be available for all mentors, and regular support and supervision will be provided by the programme co-ordinator. Mentors are not required to have any previous experience in mentoring but a positive attitude, friendly manner, understanding of confidentiality and preferably some awareness of different learning disabilities would all be desirable. Volunteer mentors need to be able to commit to the programme for at least 6 months, with a minimum commitment of 3 hours per week. Once trained, volunteer mentors will be matched to clients with learning disabilities to support them in securing and carrying out a volunteering opportunity which suits them (often accompanying them to the volunteering position on a regular basis) and furthers their long-term objectives.

Why these skills are required

Essential - good listener; excellent communicator; non-judgmental; good team player. Desirable - previous mentoring experience; experience of working with people with learning disabilities.

What is in it for you

Full training is provided, Volunteer mentors will receive Level 2 accredited NVQ qualification in Mentoring and Employability. They will also gain valuable experience of acting as a mentor in a specialist capacity - to people with learning disabilities. They will gain an increased awareness of different volunteering opportunities available in the Borough and the support available for people with learning disabilities. Volunteer mentors will also receive the satisfaction of supporting the mentee with whom they are matched, and the chance to work with them over time to see the benefit of their support in the long-term.

The entrance to the office is situated opposite Woolwich Arsenal train station. Above the entrance is a sign for Equitable House Business Centre. Free parking for 3 hours available in Tesco.
