Volunteer Back-up Mini Bus Driver for Adult Social Care Day Centre (Deptford, London) - D1 License

Deptford Mission

We are looking for regular and occasional volunteer drivers to provide safe and friendly transportation for our older members to and from our adult social care centre. A D1 License would be required for the role. We possess two wheelchair-accessible shuttle buses which are stored on our premises. Each bus is wheelchair accessible and accommodates 8 service users, 1 passenger assistant, and 1 driver. Our service users are primarily located in Deptford, Lewisham, and Greenwich.

Detailed Description

Our charity is called Deptford Mission, located on 1 Creek Road, London. Our organisation operates a day centre three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) that provides social activities and community support for older persons in the community. We run a shuttle bus service that transports older persons to our centre, where they can enjoy a three-course lunch, coffee and tea service, and activities such as bingo, musical classes, chair yoga, and occasional local outings. Our day centre is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 3:00pm. We possess two wheelchair-accessible shuttle buses which are stored on our premises. Each bus is wheelchair accessible and accommodates 8 service users, 1 passenger assistant, and 1 driver. Our service users are primarily located in Deptford, Lewisham, and Greenwich. We are looking for regular and occasional volunteer drivers to provide safe and friendly transportation for our older members to and from our centre. A D1 License would be required for the role. We can provide additional free training through MiDAS. Each driver is accompanied with a Passenger Assistant to assist with navigation, phone calls, and assisting members. We have the following volunteer shifts available. Tuesdays: Morning Shift: 9:00am – 12:00pm (3 hours) Afternoon Shift: 2:30pm – 5:30pm (3 hours) Wednesdays: Morning Shift: 9:00am – 12:00pm (3 hours) Afternoon Shift: 2:30pm – 5:30pm (3 hours) Thursdays : Morning Shift: 9:00am – 12:00pm (3 hours) Afternoon Shift: 2:30pm – 5:30pm (3 hours)

Why these skills are required

• To drive the charity’s vehicles in a safe, legal, and professional way. • To recognize and assist with the additional needs of vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled. • Ensure safety and wellbeing of members throughout the journey, to always provide a high standard of customer service, and behave in a friendly and professional way to community members and colleagues. • To ensure that the high visibility PPE is always worn in vehicle movement areas. • To ensure that speed limits are observed • To check the condition of the vehicle prior to commencing driving routes, which includes carrying out the safety walk round check, ensuring that any defect in the vehicle or equipment is reported as soon as possible • Ensuring that the vehicle is clean and tidy before starting service. • To comply with the laws and company regulations regarding the use of mobile phones, smoking/vaping in company vehicles and the use of prohibited equipment (such as games consoles) whilst on duty. Ensure all safety accidents/incidents are reported using the charity’s reporting procedure. • To ensure a full understanding of emergency and evacuation plans.

We Welcome
We work with volunteers from diverse backgrounds and walks of life and can accommodate individuals with learning differences, complex histories, and support needs. We also provide lunch to our volunteers during their shifts, and we are happy to help support specific skills that they may wish to develop. Many of our volunteers have obtained experience and confidence to pursue employment in social care, health care, and higher education.
