Wednesday/ Sunday Supporting people with disabilities to go sailing

Tideway Sailability

Tideway Sailability provides sailing for people with a wide range of disabilities. This activity allows our sailors, assisted by our volunteers, to the extent necessary, to take control in a challenging but safe environment very different to anything they may have experienced before. We get consistently good feedback from our sailors, family members and their helpers. We need volunteers to run all our activities- we have no paid staff.

Detailed Description

Tideway Sailability provides sailing for people with a wide range of disabilities. This activity allows our sailors, assisted by our volunteers, to the extent necessary, to take control in a challenging but safe environment very different to anything they may have experienced before. We get consistently good feedback from our sailors, family members and their helpers. We need volunteers to run all our activities- we have no paid staff. New volunteers are always needed to help with welcoming and preparing our sailors, helping with the boats shoreside, on the water accompanying our sailors, and with administration. No previous sailing experience is needed- we will teach you to sail. We use adapted boats that are simple to learn for both our sailors and the volunteers who accompany them. We sail in an enclosed former commercial dock in Rotherhithe and assistance is always on hand in case of difficulty. For more experienced sailors, whether current or rusty, we can help refresh your existing skills and learn new ones while doing something you enjoy. If you have a disability or impairment yourself, we can fit the volunteering around your needs. We operate on Wednesdays between April and October, and on Sundays throughout the year. We offer sailing between 10.30 and 3.30 (with a break for lunch). We ask volunteers to arrive around 9.30am to help set up, and the day is usually finished around 4pm. Good public transport links nearby (Canada Water) and if you would need to use your Over 60 Travelcard before 9.00am we can help with the additional travel cost. Car parking also available. New volunteers are welcome at any time. You can come as often as you are able and we do not operate a formal volunteer rota- obviously the more often you can come the quicker you will get up to speed and be able to make a real difference to our sailors’ lives. Email us for more information or just come and see us when we are operating.
