Volunteer with Older People in Central London
ScotsCare
We are looking for volunteers who can offer time, conversation and companionship.
You can help someone feel more connected, happier and less alone by spending time with them in person, or speaking with them regularly by phone You could be visiting someone at home or accompanying them in their community, chatting in coffee shops or talking while you walk. What you do will depend on what the client would like. Our clients are older Scots aged 60 plus who simply want to enjoy activities many of us take for granted. As one of our volunteers once said, “this is an easy, very meaningful way to help someone and is immensely rewarding and fun!” Training begins end of September
Befriending, Buddying & Mentoring
Basic IT skills - internet & email, Organising & Planning
No experience is necessary. More importantly you will need: • Good communication and listening skills, including spoken English • To be friendly, warm and non-judgemental • Honest, reliable and committed • Empathetic • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and boundaries, which will be covered in training You will also need to be able to commit to volunteering for 6 months, although most stay involved for longer, only because they enjoy what they do. Having an interest in, or a connection to Scotland would be beneficial but is not essential.
We provide training before you start, ongoing support once you are matched, out-of-pocket expenses, references, social events and newsletters. This could be an ideal opportunity to gain practical experience of working with adults in a health and social care setting. It would also suit anyone who enjoys meeting new people and making their lives a little brighter.
Meetings are normally one to three hours per week or fortnight at times to suit you and our clients, plus the time to travel to meetings. Phone calls are usually 15 minutes to one hour.
