Food Safety & Hygiene Coordinator

Idia's Community Kitchen

Help protect over 3,300 people monthly in Hackney by ensuring our food safety standards are second to none. We need a hands-on volunteer to sort surplus food donations, check expiry dates, pack parcels, and conduct hygiene checks at our central kitchen base. Flexible morning slots available to match incoming deliveries. Ideal for anyone passionate about reducing food waste and supporting their local community!

Detailed Description

Are you passionate about tackling food waste and supporting your local community? We are a grassroots charity serving hot, nutritious meals, food parcels, and vital essentials across Hackney. Because we process large volumes of surplus food close to its expiry date, we need a hands-on Volunteer Food Safety & Hygiene Coordinator to ensure everything is sorted, packed, and served safely. How You’ll Help Our Organisation Protect Over 3,300 People Monthly: Safeguard the health of 1,565 direct individuals and 1,776 indirect beneficiaries who rely on our services every month—a number continuing to rise with the cost-of-living crisis. Maximise Surplus Food: Safely evaluate and rescue incoming surplus donations, turning potential food waste into vital community support. Maintain High Standards Across 5 Outreach Sites: Keep our central kitchen base at Fellows Court compliant so meals and food parcels distributed across our 5 weekly serving locations meet strict safety standards. What You’ll Be Doing Surplus Sorting & Packing: Inspect incoming donations, safely discard expired items, and pack parcels for outreach distribution. Compliance & Temperature Logging: Perform regular hygiene audits on storage, refrigeration, and preparation equipment at our central kitchen base. Stock & Allergen Control: Oversee First-In, First-Out (FIFO) stock rotation, clear date labelling, and strict allergen separation. Support Monitoring Systems: Assist with portion tallies and stock checks that feed into our headcount and ingredient tracking systems.
