At ReachOut we’re offering all that and more through our exciting opportunity to volunteer as a mentor in a local school!

Detailed Description

How it works - Give just two hours of your week to support young people aged 9-14 to build key socio-emotional skills and grow in confidence. - Choose a 12-week project at one of our partner schools in your area that fits your schedule. - Work with like-minded volunteers with support from ReachOut staff as you get stuck into collective mentoring activities and engaging group games. - From creative, to active, to thought-provoking activities on our curriculum, there are so many opportunities to watch your mentees build team-working, problem solving and emotion management skills thanks to your support. - If you love it like we think you will, choose to volunteer on as many short programmes as you want! Gain recognition for your hours and through our Mentor of the Term Awards! Is this the right opportunity for me? - Feel a part of something bigger as you support young people who are constrained by circumstances. - Develop your own soft skills that employers look for, including initiative, teamwork, communication and leadership skills. - Feel supported by inclusive training ahead of starting and weekly support from your Youth Development Lead on your project, giving you everything you need to excel as a mentor, even if it’s your first time! - Don’t be out of pocket! - Simply claim your travel expenses back up to £4/day. We also cover the cost of your enhanced DBS check which is organised for you as part of your onboarding process.

Why these skills are required

At ReachOut, our behaviours are being committed, compassionate, solution-focused and ambitious. These are particularly important behaviours for our mentors to display as role models to our young people! We encourage you to apply if you have shared lived experience with our young people or have previous experience working with children, but these are not requirements.  Whilst previous experience can be beneficial to your mentoring, ReachOut can also be the perfect first step towards working in youth development or for anyone wanting to work on their personal growth and development. Full training is provided to allow you to excel as a mentor and develop your own skills!

Time Commitment

Our projects run for 2 hours a week over a period of 12 weeks during term-time, providing 24 hours of volunteering per project. Each project has a regular weekday and time which will be made available to choose preferences from. Volunteers looking for more hours can choose projects at schools with back-to-back projects running or can complete two projects simultaneously running on different weekdays.

Role is available within Hackney and other London boroughs. Projects take place at our various partner schools across London. The list of projects are available during onboarding where preferences can be chosen based on location and timing.

Schools typically have good transport links and travel expenses can be claimed up to £4/day. Directions to individual projects will be given when choosing your project.
