Hackney Shed
Hackney Shed is an inclusive theatre company for children and young people. We're seeking volunteers for Shedlight, a youth-led heritage project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Support young people to explore archives, oral histories and Hackney Shed's 25-year history, or support research behind the scenes. Later, you can assist with interviews and exhibitions. Training and support, including safeguarding, are provided.
Hackney Shed is an inclusive theatre company for children and young people delivering workshops in Hackney. We're looking for volunteers to support Shedlight: Young Voices Shining a Light on 25 Years of Inclusive History, our 25 year anniversary project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Shedlight is a youth-led heritage project exploring 25 years of Hackney Shed alongside the wider story of inclusive youth work in Hackney. In our Young Archivist group, our young people will uncover the stories, people and organisations that have shaped Hackney Shed and inclusive youth work across Hackney. Over the next year, they'll create a digital timeline and public exhibition celebrating 25 years of creativity, inclusion and community. As a volunteer, there are lots of ways to get involved. You could support young people to explore archives and oral histories, develop their research skills and work together to uncover untold stories. Or you might prefer to work behind the scenes, carrying out research to help answer questions about Hackney Shed’s history and wider story of inclusive practice. Later in the project, there will also be opportunities to support oral history interviews and help the group design and deliver their exhibition as well as vital support transcribing interviews and cataloguing archival materials. You'll be supported throughout by our Archive Manager and Digital Archivist, with safeguarding training available if needed. Whether you love history, theatre, art, interviewing, design or simply asking great questions, this is an opportunity to be part of a lasting legacy project while supporting the next generation of inclusive theatre-makers.

We are looking for volunteers who have experience in or who are interested in working with children and young people in a creative setting. An interest in theatre and/or inclusive practice is useful. People with experience in or an interest in supporting and working with children and young people with additional needs is also useful. In addition people with other skills such as research, digital design, oral history, design, set/ costume production or photography & film making are always welcome.
This is a great opportunity for volunteers who want to gain experience in working with children and young people in inclusive settings. Our team of experienced facilitators lead the sessions and offer training opportunities for volunteers related to working inclusively. Volunteers are given the opportunity to feedback and input into our work. This project comes with the opportunity to learn about oral history, archives, digital archives and exhibition production.
This is flexible. Our Young Archivists group is two Tuesday evenings a month in Hackney plus one full day in the half term break. You might be able to commit to the Tuesday evenings, the full day or some combination. We are also seeking people for ad-hoc research, transcriptions and possibly archival cataloguing which can be conducted in their own time.

The two locations are across the road from each other. Closest overground- Hackney Central Closest bus stops- The City Academy stop P 425 to Ilford 488 to Bromley By Bow or The City Academy Stop O 425 to Clapton 488 to Dalston For City Academy- From Hackney Central simply cross Amhurst Road and Mare Street and enter St John's Churchyard Gardens. You pass beside the 13th century tower of St John-at-Hackney church, walk through the churchyard gardens to Sutton Place, cross the zebra crossing to the other side of the road, turn right and walk along Homerton high street. City Academy will be on your left. For Sutton House- From Hackney Central simply cross Amhurst Road and Mare Street and enter St John's Churchyard Gardens. You pass beside the 13th century tower of St John-at-Hackney church, walk through the churchyard gardens to Sutton Place, turn right, and you will see Sutton House in front of you.
