The Boiler House Community Space Charity are dedicated to unlocking the immense potential of strengthening community networks and the support and capital they generate, both in positive and challenging times. We are seeking a committed and thoughtful individual to join our Board of Trustees as HR Trustee. This role provides strategic guidance on people related matters and plays a vital part in ensuring BHS remains a positive, inclusive and supportive place to work and volunteer. You do not need to be an HR professional, but you should bring relevant experience or understanding of people management, HR practice, or organisational development. The HR Trustee will support the Board by contributing to discussions on organisational culture, staff and volunteer wellbeing, fairness, inclusion and good employment practice, while maintaining appropriate governance and operational boundaries. Key Responsibilities • Contribute constructively to discussions on the organisation’s future direction • Contribute to the development, review and oversight of HR policies and procedures • Provide strategic advice on people management, volunteer engagement and organisational culture • Promote staff and volunteer wellbeing, inclusion, equality and fair practice • Support learning, development and training approaches for staff and volunteers • Advise the Board on UK employment law, HR best practice and emerging people‑related risks • Support the Board to meet its responsibilities as a good employer and volunteer‑involving organisation • Attend and actively contribute to 6–8 trustee meetings per year, including the AGM.

They should be able to contribute at a strategic level, work collaboratively with the Board, and understand the importance of inclusive, fair and supportive workplaces. Previous trustee or board experience is welcome, but not essential.
This role offers the opportunity to apply people‑focused skills while developing Board‑level experience in a community‑led charity. Volunteers will gain skills including: • Understanding how a charity Board operates • Strategic thinking and governance decision-making • Insight into HR practice, wellbeing and inclusion at Board level • Confidence contributing to high-level discussions • Collaborative working and influencing skills • Experience supporting organisational culture and development
The role requires an average commitment of around 1–2 days per month, including attendance at 6–8 trustee meetings per year, preparation for Board discussions, review of HR policies and people‑related papers, and providing strategic guidance on organisational culture, wellbeing, inclusion and good employment practice. Additional time may be required at key points in the year, such as policy reviews, advising on people‑related risks or sensitive issues, or contributing to discussions on learning, development or volunteer engagement.
