The Boiler House Community Space Charity are dedicated to unlocking the immense potential of strengthening community networks and the support and capital they generate, both in positive and challenging times. We are seeking an experienced and committed individual to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer. The Treasurer will oversee the financial health of BHS, ensuring sustainability, compliance, and effective financial management. Key Responsibilities • Oversee, approve, and present annual budgets, financial statements, and reports. • Ensure the charity’s financial resources meet current and future needs. • Develop and monitor reserves and investment policies. • Collaborate with the CE and finance volunteer to prepare and review budgets and financial reports for the Board and committees, and with the CE and Board to monitor financial reporting. • Maintain appropriate financial controls and ensure legal and regulatory compliance. • Advise on the financial implications of strategic plans and projects. • Keep the Board informed about financial duties, responsibilities, and risks. • Support the preparation of financial reports for funders and regulators.

Yes — this role requires a highly qualified and experienced accountant or financial administrator, ideally with a background in charity finance or in professional environments such as accountancy firms, banking, or legal practices, who is confident working with complex financial systems and can provide expert oversight to ensure full legal compliance, robust financial management, and informed guidance to the Board
This role offers the opportunity to use financial expertise to support a community led charity while strengthening governance experience. Volunteers will gain skills including: • Understanding how a charity Board operates • Strategic financial oversight and governance • Experience of charity finance, budgeting and compliance • Confidence presenting and explaining financial information • Risk awareness and decision making at Board level • Working collaboratively with trustees and senior staff
The role requires an average commitment of around 1–2 days per month, including attendance at six Trustee meetings per year, preparation and review of financial papers, regular oversight of banking and financial controls, supporting the Chief Executive with budget planning (including for funding applications), and providing guidance on financial matters. Additional time may be needed at key points in the year, such as preparing the annual report and accounts, liaising with auditors or the independent examiner, and ensuring all submissions meet Charity Commission and SORP requirements, to maintain full legal compliance and strong financial stewardship.
