Climate Ambassador for local schools (Hackney)

Climate Ambassadors (London)

Would you like to support Hackney schools to take meaningful and feasible climate action? We are looking to recruit a variety of passionate individuals to be Climate Ambassadors – particularly those who already have connections to specific education settings. The main role of a Climate Ambassador is to support education settings to create and implement a climate action plan.

Detailed Description

We are looking to recruit a variety of passionate individuals to be Climate Ambassadors – particularly those who already have connections to specific education settings. We will provide the coordination, training and support for those individuals to translate their experience and passion into climate action in education settings across London. The main role of a Climate Ambassador is to support education settings to create and implement a climate action plan. We recognise that often education setting staff have very limited capacity to take on additional workloads, despite their passion and commitment to addressing climate change. To address that, this programme pairs a Climate Ambassador with a specific education setting to provide ongoing support over the course of a school year. Climate Ambassadors will organise to meet a member of staff in their education setting six times during this time period, following our six-step pathway for developing a climate action plan. Across each of these six sessions, the Climate Ambassador will help the school's staff member to identify potential leverage points, strategies for creating a whole school buy-in, and specific actions that can be taken within the education setting. Benefits of becoming a Climate Ambassador • Developing your sustainability leadership skills via a structured project • Transferable employable skills and experience, such as stakeholder engagement, project management, and research • Concrete experience helping to enact the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change strategy. • A free DBS check once you register as a Climate Ambassador Free support you will receive: • Access to short, self-paced online learning materials covering insights from psychology and neuroscience on how to mobilise communities for climate action • An interactive (1.5 hour) session explaining a six-step climate action planning process developed by UCL CAU, that you can use to support a school • Ongoing support from the London Regional Hub Manager based at UCL CAU If you are interested in signing up, please register interest and we will request a short email from you introducing yourself.

Why these skills are required

While familiarity with sustainability is an asset, there is no specific type of expertise or experience that Climate Ambassadors in London need. What we do require is a commitment to supporting education settings to take climate action through the programme over about one school term. Each Climate Ambassador receives 1.5 hours of bespoke training from the UCL Climate Action Unit and additional online learning content to gain the skillset and knowledge required to confidently support their education setting.

What is in it for you

• Developing your sustainability leadership skills via a structured project • Transferable employable skills and experience, such as stakeholder engagement, project management, and research • Free, high quality training and support from UCL Climate Action Unit and Change Agents UK • Concrete experience helping to enact the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change strategy. • A free DBS check once you register as a Climate Ambassador

Time Commitment

About 9 hours in total, spread over 2-4 months. This is reasonably flexible, but allow 2.5 hours for training and approx. 6 hours for supporting a school (roughly one hour each for six meetings). If you would like to support schools’ climate action but only have a couple of hours, please still do reach out and we can discuss how to adapt the role for you.
