Detailed Description

We are looking for an ESOL teacher to support us at our classes that take place on a Saturday. As an ESOL Volunteer, you will play a vital role in helping participants grow in confidence and connection. Working alongside the ESOL Lead, you will support learners through guided discussions and activities, helping to create a welcoming and supportive space where everyone feels valued and encouraged. Duties and responsibilities include: • Supporting the ESOL Lead in delivering engaging, practical language-learning sessions. • Facilitate activities and discussions with a group of up to 12 learners, encouraging participation and ensuring everyone has the chance to practise and contribute. • Contribute ideas for activities, resources, and approaches that support learner progress. • Create a safe, welcoming space by building positive relationships with learners and encouraging mutual respect. • Provide informal feedback to the ESOL Lead on learner progress, challenges, and group dynamics. • Model clear, natural English, speaking at an appropriate pace and level for learners. • Assist with practical tasks, such as registering learners, setting up and tidying the space, and preparing materials. • Uphold safeguarding and inclusivity, ensuring all participants are treated with dignity and respect. Prospective volunteers do not need to have previous experience teaching ESOL but confidence in engaging a group in ready-made materials is a requirement. Volunteering to teach English to migrant workers comes with a lot of really meaningful perks. You get to build your confidence as a communicator, learn how to explain things clearly, and figure out what works when teaching people with very different language backgrounds. It’s great experience if you’re thinking about education or community work, but it’s also just useful life experience in general.

What is in it for you

- Volunteering to teach English to migrant workers comes with a lot of really meaningful perks. You get to build your confidence as a communicator, learn how to explain things clearly, and figure out what works when teaching people with very different language backgrounds. It’s great experience if you’re thinking about education or community work, but it’s also just useful life experience in general. - There’s also something genuinely uplifting about helping people who are working hard to build a life here. Watching someone pick up a new phrase, feel more confident speaking, or finally understand something they’ve been struggling with is incredibly rewarding. You see the impact right in front of you. - You also end up meeting people you might never cross paths with otherwise. Volunteers often say they learn as much from the students as the students learn from them. The stories, the humour, the resilience — it all sticks with you. And being part of a small, friendly group of volunteers makes the whole thing feel welcoming and fun rather than formal or stressful.

We Welcome
We especially welcome volunteers who have experience in ESOL teaching or feel confident supporting adults learning English from the very beginning. Because our learners are mostly migrant workers, refugees, and people who’ve moved here for a fresh start, it’s really powerful when volunteers understand those experiences or feel motivated to help others in similar situations.
