Volunteer Supervising Lawyer / Barrister (Pro Bono)

The Feminist Justice Coalition seeks experienced lawyers and barristers to supervise law students from leading UK universities. Contribute up to 5 hours weekly, guiding casework that supports women in the justice system while mentoring the next generation of legal changemakers.

Detailed Description

You will provide supervision, guidance, and oversight to law students working on real casework involving women who are: currently in prison on licence or probation living in domestic violence refuges experiencing homelessness struggling with unresolved prison complaints facing failures by probation staff dealing with property loss, family access issues, or institutional neglect Our clients are some of the most marginalised women in England, often navigating trauma, discrimination, and systemic barriers. Your expertise will help ensure their cases are handled with accuracy, dignity, and care.

Why these skills are required

- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Academic (England & Wales or equivalent jurisdiction). - Experience in criminal justice, prison law, public law, human rights, family law, or related areas desirable but not essential. - Strong legal drafting and review skills – able to supervise letters, complaints, submissions, and casework prepared by students. - Mentorship and leadership ability – patience, empathy, and willingness to guide law students in trauma‑informed practice. - Commitment to feminist and anti‑racist principles – understanding of systemic inequalities affecting women in the justice system. - Excellent communication skills – able to provide clear, constructive feedback and ensure accuracy in casework. - Organisational awareness – capable of overseeing multiple student case assignments and ensuring deadlines are met. - Flexibility and reliability – able to dedicate at least 5 hours per week, remotely or in person, with consistency. - Trauma‑informed approach – sensitivity to clients’ lived experiences and ability to safeguard dignity and rights. - Collaborative mindset – willingness to work with other supervisors, advocacy partners, and the Coalition’s leadership team.
