Basket Brigade UK is a loving, charitable organisation who deliver baskets of food, love and hope on December 23rd every year to those who could really do with a helping hand at Christmas. Help us deliver baskets filled with food, love, and hope to families across Hackney. Whether you’re hands-on making baskets, out on the road delivering them, or supporting behind the scenes, every role adds magic to the day. Volunteers bring kindness, energy, and community spirit, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary impact. Join us and be part of something bigger – one small act can change a life. Some of the duties and responsibilities can include: - Reindeers - These volunteers attend the event, make baskets AND deliver those baskets. They are very busy bees (sorry, reindeers)! They start the day alongside the Elves and then later head out into the communities. It requires a bit more flexibility. - Elves - These volunteers attend the event and make the baskets but do not deliver them, usually because they don’t have the cars. They could be packing, wrapping, adding cards, adding bows and coordinating the basket assembly lines. They focus on the hands-on, joyful work inside the venue. - Santa's Sleighs - This is our delivery only team. Volunteers in this role do not attend the build, they arrive later (typically between 12:00 and 15:00) to collect and deliver already prepared baskets. If you have a vehicle or want to drive but can’t commit to the full day, this is a great option. The volunteering opportunity at Basket Brigade does require some minimum skills and abilities to ensure the effective delivery of our mission. Volunteers should possess: 1. People-friendliness: Since the role involves interacting with individuals and families in need, a friendly and compassionate demeanour is essential. Volunteers should be comfortable engaging with people from diverse backgrounds and be able to offer a warm and supportive presence. 2. Flexibility and Adaptability: The nature of the tasks, such as making and delivering baskets, requires volunteers to be adaptable and flexible. They should be able to handle changes in plans and be willing to take on different roles as needed. 3. Teamwork Skills: Volunteers will be working closely with others, so the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively within a team is important. This ensures that the process of assembling and distributing baskets runs smoothly. 4. Basic Physical Ability: Some roles may involve lifting and carrying baskets, so a basic level of physical fitness is required. Volunteers should be able to handle the physical demands of the tasks. 5. Reliability and Commitment: Given the importance of the event, volunteers need to be reliable and committed to their roles. Punctuality and the ability to follow through on commitments are crucial.

• Experience and Skills: Volunteers will develop valuable skills in teamwork, organization, and communication. Whether you're involved in making baskets, delivering them, or supporting behind the scenes, you'll gain hands-on experience that can be applied in various settings. • Knowledge and Understanding: By participating in Basket Brigade, volunteers will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and families in need. This experience fosters empathy and a greater awareness of social issues. • Training: Volunteers will receive training to ensure they are well-prepared for their roles. This includes learning how to assemble and distribute baskets effectively and understanding the importance of their contribution. • Social Contact: Volunteering with Basket Brigade provides an opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for helping others. This social interaction can lead to lasting friendships and a strong sense of community. • Personal Development: The experience of volunteering can be incredibly rewarding on a personal level. It offers a chance to give back to the community, build self-confidence, and develop a sense of purpose and fulfilment.
The time commitment for Elves and Reindeers with the Basket Brigade volunteering opportunity is for a single day, specifically on the 23rd of December. Volunteers are expected to be available for the entire day, as the event involves both the preparation and delivery of baskets. The day typically starts in the morning with the assembly of baskets and continues into the afternoon for the delivery to families in need. This one-day commitment ensures that we can efficiently and effectively bring joy and support to those who need it most during the holiday season. Santa's Sleighs or delivery only drivers are required from midday onwards.
