Together Better is a Volunteer Centre Hackney project that aims to lighten the load on GP surgeries and encourage NHS patients into activities that will benefit their health and wellbeing, by supporting them to build inclusive and sustainable relationships and overall healthier lives. Help people learn English, build your teaching skills, and help welcome asylum seekers to Hackney! Are you passionate about helping people seeking asylum to improve their wellbeing and opportunities through learning English? Join the Together Better program of volunteers as an English teacher in migrant accommodation and make a real difference in people’s lives. As a volunteer English teacher, you’ll run weekly or twice-weekly classes for GP Practice patients in accommodation for people seeking asylum (pre-status). We are open to all sorts of classes, and you’ll be well-supported to develop your own classes, teach from existing materials, or run a less formal conversation class – whatever you think will help people develop confidence, make friends, and learn the language necessary for their lives in the UK.

No qualifications or English teaching experience necessary. Volunteers must be friendly, approachable, and comfortable working with people of varying ages and abilities. Good communication skills and reliability are essential, as is the ability to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Volunteer must complete a DBS and be confident working with vulnerable adults.
Volunteers will gain valuable experience in leading group classes, develop skills in communication and community engagement, and build confidence in planning and delivering health-focused activities. They’ll also gain a deeper understanding of patient wellbeing and social prescribing in a primary care setting. In particular, the volunteer will interact with and learn from adults seeking asylum in the UK. This role offers regular social contact, a sense of purpose, and the chance to make a real difference. Ongoing support and training are provided.
- Minimum 1 hour weekly plus planning and preparation time. - Approximately 1 hour volunteer support session every 6 weeks.
