Art Explora
Arts at Home Volunteers brings art to older people whilst tackling loneliness and isolation in care settings. Volunteers choose artworks in advance of each session to present to the residents, and though a small amount of preparation is required, prior knowledge of art history is not. Instead, the sessions are participatory and informal, with a focus on communication and connection.
Art Explora is a non-profit arts organisation that aims to share arts and culture with everyone - locally, nationally and internationally - and inspire new encounters between arts and audiences. Arts at Home Volunteers brings art to older people whilst tackling loneliness and isolation in care settings. Volunteers choose artworks in advance of each session to present to the residents, and though a small amount of preparation is required, prior knowledge of art history is not. Instead, the sessions are participatory and informal, with a focus on communication and connection. Often an artwork will spark conversation about something else entirely, with residents and volunteers reminiscing about past experiences, sharing stories and finding common ground!

We’re looking for friendly, enthusiastic team players with strong communication skills (B2-level English recommended) and an interest in art. You’ll be comfortable engaging with people of all ages and passionate about making a positive difference in your local community.
You will meet people of different ages and from different walks of life and help to alleviate feelings of loneliness in care settings through creativity and connection. You will also be offered spaces on trips to galleries and theatres with our care setting residents as part of our ‘Art Explorers at...’ project. Additionally, as an Art Explora volunteer, you will also be invited to social events and training sessions we organise throughout the year. Travel expenses are reimbursed and we are happy to provide employment references if you have attended several sessions. You will learn about art, heritage, making and history, both through your own research and from your fellow volunteers. You will develop communication and public speaking skills, gain experience working with vulnerable adults and those living with a dementia, and build an understanding of how art can support a sense of community and wellbeing.
We recommend volunteering around once a month. This allows you to return to the same setting and build a meaningful connection over time. That said, we’re happy to accommodate both short- and long-term commitments. We do ask that volunteers commit to more than a one-off session.
