We the Lea Volunteer

We the Lea

Help us celebrate the River Lea through nature, arts and community

Detailed Description

We the Lea is a community-guided walk along the River Lea that brings together local residents, community groups and nature lovers. After a successful first year with over 100 participants, we're planning our second event for May/June 2026. Last year, we focused on biodiversity and rewilding efforts, working with organisations like Thames21 and National Park City. This year, we're expanding to celebrate the connection between nature, arts and community life along the Lea. We're looking for volunteers to join our team! There's no specific role. Whether you want to coordinate outreach, lead workshops, connect with community groups or help plan the main event, there's space for you. We're working with a network of nature and rewilding organisations across East London, including The Line, Cody Dock and East London Waterworks Park. What's involved? Monthly online meetings from now until the event (May/June 2026) Join a small, committed team already working on the project Flexible involvement based on your availability and interests Opportunities to lead arts or nature workshops with local groups Help coordinate a large-scale community walking event To get in touch, visit our Instagram page @wethelea or send us a message to find out more.

What skills are required for this role

Admin, Art & Craft, Conservation, Creative & Design, Good IT Skills, Managing People, Organising & Planning

Why these skills are required

Everyone is welcome! Anyone interested in community events, arts, nature or connecting people along the Lea. Skills in event coordination, community outreach or creative facilitation are great but not essential. If you already have links with community groups or want to build them, we'd love to hear from you.

What is in it for you

Connect with your community – you'll meet people passionate about nature, arts and community. If you've never volunteered before, this is a great first step. You'll discover different organisations doing amazing work along the Lea and could find groups you want to get more involved with. Be part of something collaborative – we're all volunteers at We the Lea, so it's not super hierarchical. Everyone has a say and can have a go. If you're experienced, this is your chance to bring your skills to a collective project and work alongside others with shared values. Lead and facilitate – if you have experience facilitating workshops, you can use those skills. If you don't, you can still get involved and learn. We're running a series of workshops and events in the lead up to May/June, so there are plenty of opportunities to try things out. Bring your ideas – we want to hear from you. If you have ideas for events or workshops, we're keen to explore them together.

Time Commitment

The more you put in, the more you'll get out! We would suggest a minimum of an hour a week.
