Adult Literacy Trust are looking to train volunteer Reading Coaches to work with adult learners on a one-to-one basis. In this role you will meet a learner, on site at their college campus (New City College, Poplar), for about an hour each week (during weekday daytimes). You will help them practise skills they're learning in the classroom and encourage confidence and resilience so that they persist with their studies.

What the role looks like in practice: • Meeting a learner weekly, on site at their college campus (New City College, Poplar), for about an hour a week (during weekday daytimes in term time) • Building a constructive relationship with a learner • Helping to check the learner’s understanding, building their confidence in reading, and providing support where needed • Helping the learner practise skills they're learning in the classroom and encourage confidence and resilience so that they persist with their studies.

Adult Literacy Trust (ALT) is looking for volunteers who are: • Good communicators, with strong reading and listening skills • Friendly, warm, and approachable • Reliable and punctual • Empathetic, patient, and non-judgmental • Able to explain things in a simple manner • Passionate about literacy and its importance
• Satisfaction in helping learners make progress • New knowledge and skills from participating in ALT’s in-depth volunteer training • Making new connections • Experience in coaching and mentoring • Experience of supporting learners to overcome barriers
1 hour per week minimum for ideally at least 2 academic terms (around 6 months). ALT sessions take place during college term-time only. The majority of our learners want lessons Monday to Thursday between 10am and 4pm so you will need to be available during these times. Training will start from mid September 2026. Training consists of 3 x 2.5 hour modules - two in person and one online. We are running three courses on different days and different locations.
