Hostel Reception Volunteer (Daniel Gilbert House)

Providence Row's Daniel Gilbert House is a large homeless hostel which supports residents with a wide range of needs including around mental health, physical health and substance use. The hostel is very busy throughout the day. We need volunteers to help maintain a welcoming atmosphere at the reception and to support contractors around the building.

Detailed Description

Providence Row's Daniel Gilbert House (DGH) is a large homeless hostel which supports residents with a wide range of needs including mental health, physical health and substance use. The hostel is very busy throughout the day, with residents requesting help with a wide range of issues, other agencies attending to provide specialist support, and contractors attending to complete repair works. We are looking for volunteers to help maintain a welcoming atmosphere at the reception and to support contractors around the building. Main tasks: • Covering reception and ensuring that all residents and visitors to the building feel welcomed and supported. • Maintaining accurate records of visitor sign-ins, contractor attendance, and any incidents or important updates. • Accompanying contractors to flats so that they can complete essential repairs and health & safety work around the building. • Supporting the reception area by keeping it organised, safe, and presentable at all times, ensuring a professional and welcoming environment.

What skills are required for this role

• Understanding and willingness to work with people experiencing homelessness, mental health and addictions. • Ability to work collaboratively with others. • Ability to respond to challenging behaviour calmly and safely. • Basic understanding of health and safety. • A good listener, able to understand and communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing. • Ability to work within a team and to use own initiative. • Ability to follow policies and procedures.

Time Commitment

You will need to have some availability between Monday and Friday, 9am-5pm - we can be flexible within that. We would ideally like you to offer between 4 and 15 hours each week. We require a minimum 6 month commitment - references will be provided after this.
