At the Fixing Factory, we give things a new lease of life. From tablets to toasters, we help the public fix their broken electrical items and learn new skills. We're looking for volunteer fixers to support us carry out our service. You can volunteer as either a proficient fixer or an expert fixer. As a Proficient Fixer, your main mission is to help bring small and medium electrical items back to life — with a bit of guidance from our friendly Safety Leaders and Expert Fixers. You’ll get hands-on assessing, testing, repairing, and eventually signing off items so they can find a new home, either sold or donated to those in need. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert at everything just yet — we’re here to support you, help you grow in the role, and provide training to build your confidence and skills. Most importantly, we want you to bring your enthusiasm and curiosity to the team, and we’ll make sure you’ve got everything you need to get stuck in. Main Responsibilities: - Repair simple electrical items like lamps, power supplies, kettles, toasters etc. - Proficiently using our repair management system (training provided). - Liaise with the Fixing Factory manager and/or session leader to identify items to be repaired. As an Expert Fixer, you’ll take charge of repairing small and medium electrical items without needing guidance from others. From assessing and testing to repairing and signing off, you’ll bring gadgets back to life so they can be sold in our shop or donated to people in need. You’ll also be there to support other fixers, offering advice on more complex repairs. If you enjoy figuring things out and solving problems independently, this role is perfect for you! Main Responsibilities: - Repair any electrical items like from lamps, power supplies, kettles, toasters to laptops and some circuits. - Support Proficient Fixers with higher grade repairs. - Proficiently using our repair management system - Liaise with the Fixing Factory manager and/or session leader to identify items to be repaired. On community repair sessions we try to explain to the public how to fix an item - in this instance a core task is to talk to one person at a time whilst repairing their item. Expectations of our volunteers: - Keeping our workshop tidy and place tools back in their designated place at the end of the session or right after use. - Follow all Fixing Factory procedures, including our health, safety and safeguarding procedures and attend any training provided by FF (e.g. first-aid, anti-oppression, etc.). - Play an active role in keeping the Fixing Factory a supportive, inspiring and anti-oppressive place to be. - Be a team player - e.g. tea making, skill sharing and washing up. For both roles volunteers will be required to complete a basic DBS check, and repeat this DBS check at agreed intervals in line with legal requirements (funded by Fixing Factories).

This role requires an understanding how to fix electronic appliances. This could be basic skills and they do not need to be a professional but will need some experience.
At the Fixing Factory, we’re all about giving gadgets — and our planet — a second chance. From our bright orange workshops, we’re tackling e-waste head-on with a mix of hands-on repair sessions, skill-building workshops, and a big dose of community spirit. Think of it as a space where saving the planet is fun, practical, and just a little bit electrifying. In our first 2 years, we rescued and repurposed over 1600kg of electrical goods that were destined for landfill. But this is just the beginning. We dream of a future where every high street has a Fixing Factory, and together, we can make it happen. If you volunteer with us you will be part of making this happen! Our mission: To bring people together through fixing, cut carbon emissions, and give broken stuff a second chance. Why Fixing Matters At Fixing Factory, every repair isn’t just about saving a device — it’s about: - Reducing e-waste: By fixing instead of replacing, we keep waste out of landfill and cut carbon emissions. - Empowering communities: Learning repair skills isn’t just handy — it builds confidence, resilience, and brings people together. - Saving money: Making tech last for longer, and buying secondhand, helps people facing the cost of living crisis. - Protecting the planet: Repairing and reusing tech helps create a cleaner, greener future for us all.
