Renting Champion – volunteer campaigner for Renter’s Rights

Shelter

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. We’re recruiting private renters from across the country to become volunteer campaigners and form a Renting Champions campaign group

Detailed Description

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. We’re campaigning across the country to put pressure on the government to deliver on the promises they’ve made to renters—and to make sure the Renters' Rights Bill delivers the real change people need. We’re recruiting private renters from across the country to become volunteer campaigners and form a Renting Champions campaign group. We need renting champions to keep the pressure up and make sure the government turns the Renters’ Rights Bill into law and we can’t do this without you. Together you will run a campaign aimed at MPs and Peers and will hopefully secure a change in the law to make renting fair. While the campaigns tactics and strategy will be set by you, we would like the Renting Champion Volunteers to be able to: • Attend online meetings with MPs • Meet with your local MP • Write or sign open letters • Appear in videos on Shelter’s social media • Speak in local and national media about the Renters’ Reform Bill campaign • Speak at MP committees in parliament • Meet with Lords • Co-design campaign actions We will offer campaigns training, so there is no expectation that you will have any previous campaigns experience. However, successful candidates will already have: • Direct experience of private renting • Good at collaborating with others • Good communication skills • Good organisational skills • Personable and friendly manner • Flexible and ability to volunteer independently and on your own initiative (within the role remit) • An interest in and passionate about Shelter's mission to end homelessness • Willingness to follow Shelter’s policies, including volunteering, health & safety, equality & diversity, confidentiality & data protection Induction, Learning & Development: The role will be supported every step of the way by our Campaigns Team. You’ll learn everything you need to know about the issues facing renters and the changes to the law we need, train you in how to build a strong campaign, how to pressure MPs, how to get coverage for the campaign, and how to put together a plan for the campaign. To enable you to take part in this opportunity, Shelter will: • Provide an induction and training to support you to do your role - including how to plan a successful campaign, how to communicate with politicians, and how to negotiate and influence • Provide ongoing training and support to learn about the renting issues relevant to the renting policy changes we’re calling for, as well as e-learning including Equality & Diversity, Health & Safety, Data Protection, Environmental Awareness and Safeguarding • Provide you with a Volunteer Manager who will be your key contact • Provide you with a volunteer handbook containing all relevant policies and procedures Provide you with campaign resources such as leaflets, flyers, posters, petition cards, stickers etc Pay “out of pocket” expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy.
