Towpath Taskforce Volunteer

Canal & River Trust

Join Canal and River Trust and volunteer to look after the Regent’s Canal and Lee Navigation. You'll always be volunteering as part of a team in the great outdoors. You could be planting, painting, doing vegetation management, litter picking, or any number of things. It's a great chance to meet new people and learn about how we look after the canals and rivers. Volunteering happens on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays, from 10:30am to 3pm. Flexible commitment - volunteer once or regularly.

Detailed Description

Come and join our Towpath Taskforce, looking after the Regent’s Canal and Lee Navigation, on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays. Volunteering sessions run from 10:30am to 3pm. As a Towpath Taskforce Volunteer you will be volunteering in the great outdoors, helping to support your local canal by cutting back overgrown vegetation, clearing paths, collecting litter, painting, working from one of our boats, and many other tasks. All tools and equipment will be provided, together with expert and friendly support. We will be delighted to see you there. It's a great chance to meet new people and learn about how we look after the canals and rivers. These teams are always led by a staff member or Lead Volunteer who will make sure that you have the best time and help care for local waterways. Welfare facilities (toilet, tea, biscuits etc.) are provided at all events by one of our boats or at nearby facilities. Joining instructions will be sent out before the event to everyone signed up. This roles is open to under 18s provided that you are accompanied by an adult at all times.

You will need: · Sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing. · Willingness to work outdoors with others. · Awareness of water and outdoor safety. · Punctuality and attentiveness. **Please note that under 18's must have a guardian present throughout the session**.

Time Commitment

Towpath Taskforces run 3-4 times a month, or more in the summer. Each Taskforce lasts from 10.30am to 3pm. It is usually Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, but we sometimes hold events on other days. You can volunteer as often as you like, just once, or more frequently, it's up to you!

In Tower Hamlets we have two locations: Victoria Park (Old Ford Lock 8) and Olympic Park (Old Ford Lock 19).

Victoria Park: Mile End, Bethnal Green or Cambridge Heath stations. Olympic Park: Hackney Wick or Pudding Mill Lane stations.

We welcome people of all abilities and backgrounds to our sessions, as one-off or regular volunteers. Whilst we aim to make all of our sessions accessible to all, some of our locations are more difficult to reach for anyone with access requirements.
