Advice Support Volunteer (Sylheti speaking)

St Hilda's East needs an Advice Support Volunteer to help ensure our Welfare Advice Service runs smoothly. Tasks include: - setting up the waiting room for drop in sessions. - Greeting and taking the details of clients - Carrying out triage (preliminary assessment of needs) - Admin duties such as photocopying and scanning documents. As many of our clients are Bengali, we are looking for a volunteer who is bilingual in English and Syhleti. You need to be available Thurs and Fri mornings.

Detailed Description

St Hilda's East provides a free welfare advice service at our community centre in East London. It is a lifeline to many people – particularly those who struggle accessing rights and entitlements, due to a lack of knowledge and language barriers. The service focuses on welfare benefits, debt and housing issues. We are looking for an Advice Support Volunteer to help ensure our service runs smoothly. Tasks include: - setting up the waiting room for drop in sessions. - Greeting and taking the details of clients - Carrying out triage (preliminary assessment of needs) - Admin duties such as photocopying and scanning documents. As many of our clients are Bengali, we are looking for a volunteer who is bilingual in English and Syhleti. You need to be available on Thursday and Friday mornings, 9.30am-12pm, for this role, as this is when our drop-in service runs. This is a fantastic role for anyone looking to gain more experience in the advice field.

Admin, Basic IT skills - internet & email, Language Skills, Reading & Writing, Customer Service

Why these skills are required

You must be able to read and write in English and be able to speak in Sylheti as many of our clients are Bengali. You should enjoy working with the public, be approachable, and have good customer service skills.

Time Commitment
