Are you passionate about reading and eager to make a real difference? Read Easy Tower Hamlets is looking for kind, patient volunteers to support adults learning to read - often for the first time. As a Reading Coach you will offer one-to-one coaching, either twice a week (30 mins) or once a week (1 hour). You will use a proven, phonics-based reading programme. Full training and ongoing support is provided - no teaching experience is needed! A flexible role that can fit around your schedule.

We offer free, confidential, one-to-one coaching through a network of local volunteers. With your help, adults can unlock new opportunities and build confidence through reading. What’s Involved: • One-to-one coaching in person twice a week (30 mins) or once a week (1 hour) in a designated room in a public building near to you • Use a proven, phonics-based reading programme • Relaxed, confidential sessions tailored to each reader • Full training and ongoing support - no teaching experience is needed! Sessions take place in quiet designated public spaces like libraries or community centres. You will need: • Strong reading skills and a love of books • Patience, positivity, and good listening skills • Respect for all backgrounds and abilities • Reliability, empathy, and discretion • Willingness to follow guidelines and work independently
Literacy & Educational Skills • Enhanced understanding of reading strategies, literacy development, supporting diverse learning styles and adapting approaches accordingly. Communication & Interpersonal Skills • Active listening and empathetic communication • Confidence in giving constructive feedback and improved ability to motivate and encourage Personal Development • Increased self-awareness, reflection and sense of purpose from helping someone grow • Resilience and adaptability, especially when progress is slow or unpredictable Professionalism & Leadership • Experience working independently and responsibly to ethical standards • Ability to follow structured guidelines and policies • Leadership and mentoring skills, useful in many professional settings. You won’t be doing this alone. We will provide: • Full induction, training, policies, resources, and ongoing guidance • Hands-on support from Coordinators and a Literacy Specialist for expert support • Access to your Read Easy UK Regional Adviser • Opportunities to connect with fellow Reading Coaches, attend forum & meetings. We will provide you with a reference after you've volunteered.
You can conduct your coaching at times that suit you. The Coaching takes up to 1 hour a week. Additional time will be required for training and meetings as and when. This is also flexible.
