Food Pantry Service Volunteer

Bromley By Bow Centre

Bromley by Bow Centre's Food Pantry supports people experiencing food insecurity by providing low-cost food and essential items, while addressing medium and long-term financial issues through holistic support. We are looking for 2 volunteers who are passionate about supporting people with food provision and can commit to Thursdays between 9:30am and 1.30pm. The role includes assisting pantry members with selecting items, taking payments, booking appointments, tidying, and welcoming everyone.

Detailed Description

Bromley by Bow Centre's Food Pantry supports people experiencing food insecurity by providing low-cost food and essential items, while addressing medium and long-term financial issues through holistic support. It aims to provide individual dignity by lowering the financial barriers to providing food, offering choice, and supporting long-term change. We are looking for 2 volunteers who are passionate about supporting people with food provision and can commit to Thursdays between 9:30am and 1.30pm. The role includes; - assisting pantry members with selecting items - taking payments - booking appointments - helping to manage food supplies in a safe manner - helping ensure the food pantry and communal areas are kept safe, clean and tidy. - talking to and connecting with Food Pantry members, so we can provide a warm welcome each week - supporting members to access other services, activities and events, at the Bromley by Bow Centre and externally.

What skills are required for this role

Admin, Basic IT skills - internet & email, Good IT Skills, Organising & Planning

Why these skills are required

We are ideally looking for volunteers who live locally and/or know the local area. You will have has good communication and interpersonal skills so that pantry members feel welcome and supported Ideally you will have some work-related experience of food and/or food projects, or working in retail, so the service can run safely. You will be comfortable with using technology to take payments and enter and edit data on a spreadsheet. You will need to be aged 18 or over as this volunteering involves supporting vulnerable adults.

You will receive ongoing support and training relevant to the role and can claim travel expenses in line with the Bromley by Bow Centre's volunteering policy.

Time Commitment

You need to be available weekly on Thursdays between 9:30am and 1:30pm, as this is when the Food Pantry is open.

Bromley by Bow Centre is a 5-minute walk from Bromley by Bow Tube Station and 10 minutes from Devon’s Road DLR Station and Bow Church DLR Station. Both the D8 and 488 buses stop outside the Centre on St Leonard’s Street.
