Grandmentor to Young Person Leaving Care
Volunteering Matters
Grandmentors Tower Hamlets is seeking volunteers across the borough willing to empower and support young people (16-24 yrs) transitioning from the care system to independent living. We are particularly interested to hear from volunteers aged 50 plus. You will meet (online or face-to-face) a young person for 1-2 hours per week for at least 6 months. You will receive full training and ongoing guidance.
Every year young people aged 16 -24 leave the care system in Tower Hamlets and far too many are not prepared for life after care, or are not in education, employment or training. Grandmentors Tower Hamlets (part of Volunteering Matters) is seeking volunteers across the borough willing to empower and support young people transitioning from the care system to independent living. Typical duties of a Grandmentor: > Meeting with a young person (16-24 years) each week > Improving life skills, self-esteem and confidence > Providing advice on managing emotional and physical wellbeing > Signposting to public services that offer housing, legal and financial assistance > Helping your mentee set goals concerning education, employment or training > Assisting with language development for Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children > Offering guidance on building positive relationships and avoiding negative influences. Due to the nature of this role, we are particularly interested to hear from volunteers aged 50 plus. You must be committed to meeting (online or face-to-face) a young person 1-2 hours per week for at least 6 months. You will receive full training and ongoing guidance. All expenses incurred during active mentorship will be paid.

You must be age 50+, open-minded, empathetic, patient and helpful to establish a beneficial relationship. Basic IT and communication skills are needed to communicate with mentees, staff and other mentors, and to use our system to record outcomes after each mentoring session with a young person.
The joy of working with young people is unique, they bring their own life experiences, needs and expectations. This makes the role of a Grandmentor highly rewarding, but never boring. This role is beneficial and gratifying to someone passionate about helping vulnerable young people transform their lives for the better. In addition, anyone looking to enter or re-enter youth work as a paid worker, but who lacks the necessary expertise or insight would gain valuable experience from this role. We provide mentors with full training and guidance, and all expenses incurred during active mentoring will be paid.
1-2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. This commitment is needed because because building a trusted relationship with your mentee and supporting them to navigate challenges, develop crucial life skills, and work towards long-term goals takes time.
