Pets As Therapy (PAT) Volunteer

We are looking for compassionate individuals to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to our patients, families, and staff by visiting the hospice with your trained and registered Pets as Therapy (PAT) dog. Through this role, you will help bring joy and calm, offering a unique therapeutic presence that only a friendly and well-behaved animal can provide. Your visits will play a key part in enhancing the emotional wellbeing of those in our care.
Key Responsibilities: • Visit patients in inpatient wards and Day Hospice. • Allow patients, family members and staff to interact with and benefit from time spent with your PAT dog. • Adhere to Pets as Therapy (PAT) guidelines and the hospice’s policies on infection control, safeguarding, and health and safety. • Be sensitive and adaptable to the needs of patients, including understanding when interaction with the dog may not be appropriate. • Report any concerns regarding patient wellbeing or your dog’s behaviour to hospice staff or the Volunteer Coordinator. Training and Support Provided: • Induction to the hospice and Core Training. • Ongoing support and supervision from the Volunteer Coordinator. • Access to additional training opportunities if required.

• Ownership of a registered Pets as Therapy (PAT) dog with up-to-date certification. • A calm, approachable, and patient manner, both for you and your dog. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Sensitivity to the diverse needs of hospice patients, families, and staff. • Ability to work within boundaries, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
• Make a positive impact on the emotional and mental wellbeing of patients and their families. • Bring joy and comfort to the hospice community. • Gain experience in a healthcare environment while sharing the therapeutic benefits of your pet.
