Leisure Volunteer - Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (RNRU)

The RNRU is a 27-bed unit specialising in early inpatient rehabilitation for adults after single incident neurological events other than spinal injury. The majority of our patients have suffered head injuries, strokes, subarachnoid haemorrhages or other forms of diffuse brain damage resulting, for example, from certain infections or cardiorespiratory arrest. We are looking for volunteers to assist in running a programme of leisure activities on the RNRU.

Detailed Description

The RNRU is a 27-bed unit specialising in early inpatient rehabilitation for adults after single incident neurological events other than spinal injury. The majority of our patients have suffered head injuries, strokes, subarachnoid haemorrhages or other forms of diffuse brain damage resulting, for example, from certain infections or cardiorespiratory arrest. We are looking for volunteers to assist in running a programme of leisure activities on the RNRU. To get patients involved in using their creativity and imagination. Would you like to share any skills, talents or hobbies you may have or have you just a little time to share with our patients? You may be skilled in anything from art, reading, poetry, music, playing games etc. A key part of this volunteer role will be to provide reassurance and company to patients within the RNRU. As a leisure volunteer you will be helping our structured patient’s activities on a day to day basis. You will bring your own unique talents to this role. Duties: 1. To help staff managing the activity programme for patients – crafts, games, gym, etc. 2. To assist patients with any specific tasks they would like to achieve – writing a letter, making a phone call, finding out about an event etc. 3. Chatting to patients if they would like company – this could be either in the patient’s own room, communal areas like the lounges and outside garden. 4. Carry out activities on a one-to-one basis with a resident or in small groups 5. To be able to encourage participation 6. To offer hospitality to patients – tea, coffee, biscuits. 7. To clear up after activities and keep the day room and other areas tidy. 8. Assisting with general ward tidiness. 9. To inform staff about activities undertaken with patients and any significant changes in mood or behaviour. 10. To assist staff in taking patients to groups, the hospital cafeteria and on outings. 11. To undergo training as required. 12. Asking patients to give feedback on their experience of the ward by completing a survey 13. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required.

ESSENTIAL: • Ability to relate well to people on a one to one basis and be sympathetic to others’ situations. • Well presented, with a friendly and approachable manner and good verbal communication skills • An ability to be patient and calm even in the face of difficult situations. • An ability to act on own initiative within the role description • Common sense, flexibility and initiative. • Reliable and enthusiastic. • Willing to participate in a variety of activities appropriate to the client group. • A willingness to be flexible and to follow the guidance of a Volunteer Supervisor • A commitment to improve the patient’s experience of their time in hospital. • A commitment to the trust’s equal opportunities and diversity policies • Respectful of confidential information. • Sense of humour. • Basic understanding of brain injury/neurological conditions. • Interest in leisure as a way of promoting wellbeing • To be willing to receive training in any areas as appropriate to the volunteer role. DESIRABLE: • Experience of working with adults with disabilities • Experience of interacting with people with brain injuries or communication problems • Experience of facilitating group sessions • Teaching skills
