HR Volunteers

Children with Voices

Children with Voices started over 20 years ago with one woman, a community hall and a belief that no child in Hackney should be forgotten. We are looking for someone who knows HR and wants to help us get it right, so that everyone who works here is recruited fairly, supported properly and treated well.

Detailed Description

Children with Voices started over 20 years ago with one woman, a community hall and a belief that no child in Hackney should be forgotten. Our founder Michelle began with a Winter Wonderland for local children at London Fields School, covered by the Hackney Gazette, after being named Family Mosaic Inspirational Tenant of the Year. Today we are a registered charity at Fawcett Estate Community Hall in Clapton, running a Community Food Hub, Jumping Beans, SEND support, alternative education and work in local schools. Over 100,000 children and families have come through our doors. We are looking for volunteers to support with our HR system with one of the roles requiring more experience. Who this role suits: - A retired semi retired HR professional, or someone CIPD qualified who wants to give something back. If you have spent your career on policies, recruitment and doing right by staff, this is a chance to use all of it somewhere it will genuinely change things. - A senior HR professional, CIPD qualified or with equivalent experience, who has led a people function before. Perhaps recently retired, perhaps between roles, perhaps wanting something that matters. You will be comfortable advising a CEO, holding a difficult conversation and knowing where the legal lines sit. We would be looking for someone to volunteer for approximately 6-10 hours a week, with time in the office by agreement. Duties and responsibilities: • Reviewing and updating our HR policies so they hold up against UK employment law and safeguarding requirements • Helping us recruit and onboard fairly and inclusively, with safe recruitment practice built in from the start • Advising our managers when questions come up, and telling us plainly when something needs professional or legal advice we should pay for • Keeping our HR and volunteer records accurate, secure and compliant with data protection • Helping us build simple, honest processes for supervision and staff wellbeing Duties and responsibilities (senior role): • Leading our HR function and setting the standard for how we recruit, support and look after everyone here • Leading our HR Support and Administration volunteers, giving them direction and helping them develop • Making sure our policies and practices hold up against UK employment law and safeguarding requirements • Advising Michelle and our managers on people matters, and telling us plainly when something needs paid professional or legal advice • Building fair, inclusive and safe recruitment and onboarding across staff and volunteers • Overseeing HR and volunteer records so they are accurate, secure and compliant with data protection • Helping us build honest processes for supervision, wellbeing and handling concerns What you will need: • Real HR knowledge and current understanding of UK employment law. • Sound judgement, because you will meet situations that need care. • Absolute discretion, as you will handle confidential information about staff and volunteers. What you will need (senior role): Senior HR experience and current knowledge of UK employment law. Real experience of leading a team, because you will have volunteers looking to you. The judgement to know what you can decide and what needs escalating. Absolute discretion, as you will handle confidential information. Charity experience is welcome but not essential. You do not need charity sector experience. What you will get from us: The chance to build something properly rather than patch it up. Direct access to our CEO and leadership team. Proper support, so you are never left to figure it out alone. A personal reference from Michelle, and the knowledge that a whole team is better looked after because of you. What you will get from us (senior): Full ownership of a people function you can build the way it should be built. Direct access to our CEO and a real voice in how this charity runs. A team of your own to lead. A personal reference from Michelle, and the knowledge that everyone here is better looked after because of you.
