Hackney Dudes volunteer
MRS Independent Living
The Hackney Dudes is a lively social club for older men in Hackney, with a programme of fun and sociable activities every week. We need volunteers to help support the group on our fortnightly trips in and around London.
Hackney Dudes is a lively social club for older men in Hackney. Every week we have a programme of activities that all Dudes are invited to join. This includes a weekly drop-in at the Dalston Curve Garden, fortnightly trips in and around London, a weekly Zoom call and a Dudes art group, music group and electronics club. We're looking for volunteers who are available every other Wednesday to help out on the Dudes' trips. Previous trip destinations have included London's museums, galleries and tourist attractions (big and small) as well as activities like boat trips, go-karting, ten-pin bowling... Lunch is always included. During trips, volunteers will help the Project Lead: - Make sure everyone is accounted for and safe. - Provide support for those who need more help to get around. - Make sure everyone is participating and having a good time. - Distribute lunches and refreshments.

No specific skills are required, but volunteers will need to share the values and ethos of the Hackney Dudes and MRS Independent Living (which runs the project) which include being: - Non-judgemental - Empathetic - Sensitive and alert to individual needs - Understanding of people's diverse range of experiences - Able to recognise when someone is withdrawn, is not their usual self, or might be struggling with something they have not shared.
The Dudes are a lovely group of older men who enjoy spending time together. Volunteers will be warmly welcomed into this strong community and be able to join the group in experiencing the vibrant arts, cultural and community offer in and around Hackney and London. Free tickets and lunch will be provided for volunteers.
Ideally we would like volunteers to be able to commit to regular attendance every other Wednesday, but one-off or sporadic attendance is also OK. The trips are usually 11am to 3/4pm, depending on the destination. We always take public transport, meeting at Dalston Curve Garden, unless it's not possible for some reason.
