The People Hive is looking for new trustees to join our Board and help support adults with learning disabilities to live connected, fulfilling, and independent lives. Who we are The People Hive is a small charity based in Twickenham (but operating across the Borough of Richmond and surrounding areas) which runs a gallery selling the work of local artists and crafters, and an activity space for adults with learning disabilities which provides a safe space for them to meet others, join in activities and combat social isolation. We deliver a range of social activities, life skills programmes and work experience opportunities to help our members develop the skills and experience needed to live fulfilling, meaningful, independent lives as active members of their communities. What we’re recruiting for We’re on the lookout for some new Trustees to join our Board. Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. Acting collectively as the Board of Trustees, trustees are responsible for ensuring that the charity pursues its charitable purposes, complies with its governing document and relevant legislation, and uses its resources to achieves its missions and objectives as effectively as possible. What are the key responsibilities? Working collectively with other Trustees, you will: Contribute to the setting and monitoring of the charity’s strategic direction Attend and participate fully in Board meetings and related discussions Review and approve policies, budgets, annual reports, and other governance documents Monitor the financial position and performance of the charity Ensure appropriate systems of internal control and risk management are in place Support and challenge senior staff or volunteers constructively where appropriate Safeguard the reputation, values, and long-term sustainability of the charity Ensure the charity operates in accordance with equality, safeguarding, health and safety, and other relevant obligations Declare conflicts of interest and act in accordance with the charity’s conflict of interest policy Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding the affairs of the charity How much time will this take up per month? Trustees are expected to: Attend approximately 8 Board meetings per year Read papers and prepare adequately for meetings Participate in occasional additional meetings, training sessions, or charity events as required The estimated commitment is approximately 2 hours per month. Who we’re looking for Trustees should be able to demonstrate: Essential Commitment to the charity’s aims and values Ability to exercise sound and independent judgement Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a Board Understanding of the importance of good governance and accountability Integrity and commitment to acting in the best interests of the charity Ability to maintain confidentiality Desirable Knowledge or experience of: learning disabilities, adult social care, governance, charity operations, fundraising and marketing, community engagement, or lived experience relevant to the charity’s work Previous trustee experience is not essential in any shape or form and full training will be provided to anyone joining our Board. We’re in a fairly strong financial position and are looking to establish the foundations required to grow our reach and increase the number of programmes and activities we run over the coming years. We have a new CEO and we’re looking for fresh ideas to help us achieve our aims and become a recognised, trusted provider across the Borough of Richmond. Specific projects we’re working on include research projects to understand the needs of our audiences, our reach and how we’re viewed locally; a brand refresh and website relaunch; policy review and documentation updates across the organisation; the launch of a new fundraising strategy; pilot programmes for life skills, healthy futures and employability initiatives and more. If you’re experienced in fundraising, marketing, programme delivery/operations, data, legal (although we’d love to hear from anyone who’s interested in joining us), this might just be the right organisation for you!
