Detailed Description

This is a critical trustee role at an exciting point in the charity’s evolution, as the League of Friends refreshes its strategy in response to the changing NHS landscape and a growing focus on community health. The Treasurer will play a key leadership role in ensuring the financial sustainability, integrity and impact of the charity. The role combines strategic financial oversight at Board level with a practical, hands-on approach initially, supporting light financial administration and helping to build strong foundations for future growth and impact. This is a unique opportunity to join the League of Friends at a pivotal moment of change, helping shape how the organisation evolves: • From a traditional hospital charity • To a strategic community health partner aligned with NHS priorities The Treasurer will play a vital role in ensuring resources are used effectively to maximise impact for patients, the hospital and the wider community. ________________________________________ Purpose of the Role To: • Maintain oversight of the charity’s financial position and ensure long-term sustainability • Support the Board in making informed, evidence-based financial decisions • Ensure proper financial controls, governance and compliance are in place • Act as a trusted advisor on financial strategy, risk and resource allocation ________________________________________ Key Responsibilities 1. Strategic Financial Leadership • Advise the Board on the financial implications of strategic decisions and funding priorities • Support the development of a financially sustainable strategy aligned to the charity’s evolving role in community health • Provide insight into financial risks, opportunities and long-term planning ________________________________________ 2. Financial Oversight & Governance • Oversee budgets, financial plans and reporting to ensure robust financial management • Ensure appropriate financial controls, procedures and governance are in place • Support the development and review of: o Reserves policy o Investment approach o Financial governance framework • Ensure compliance with Charity Commission requirements and relevant regulations ________________________________________ 3. Reporting & Board Engagement • Prepare and present clear, accessible financial reports to the Board • Support trustees in understanding financial information and decision implications • Present accounts at the AGM and highlight key insights ________________________________________ 4. Hands-On Financial Support (Initial Phase) Given the charity’s evolution, the Treasurer will initially: • Support light bookkeeping and financial administration, while an Operations Adminstrator is sourced. • Work alongside volunteers and/or external support to maintain accurate records • Help establish scalable processes as the organisation grows ________________________________________ 5. Risk, Audit & Controls • Oversee financial risk management processes • Liaise with external auditors or independent examiners where required • Ensure financial transparency and accountability ________________________________________ 6. Collaboration & Contribution • Work closely with the Chair, trustees and other leads (e.g. HR, Partnerships, Data) • Contribute to funding decisions using the agreed framework • Support fundraising strategy where appropriate

Time Commitment

• Attendance at Board meetings (approx. 11 per year) • Preparation and review of financial reports • Additional ad hoc support, particularly during the strategy implementation phase • Occasional involvement in finance-related discussions or initiatives
