Children's Residential Project Driver

Free to Be Kids

Our residential Driver volunteers volunteer 1 week at a time, staying on-site overnight, and are integral in making our projects work: picking up children from their homes, and taking them to all of their activities!

Detailed Description

Free to Be run adventurous, nature based residentials to give vulnerable young people a space to have fun and to feel invited and accepted. You’ll have lots to talk to the kids about whilst they’re meeting animals at the farm, paddling on the beach for the first time, playing football (whilst covered in facepaint of course!) and camping out under the stars. These activities are all carefully designed to broaden horizons but also to scaffold the building of self-confidence, resilience, and trust in others. Our Drivers volunteer 1 week at a time, staying on-site overnight, and are integral in making our projects work! As many of our young people would be unable to get to a central meeting point, we go and pick them all up from their houses at the start of the project and drop them off again at the end. We also go out to activities in the minibus each day and unsurprisingly, when asked to draw a picture to summarise their week at Free to Be, many of the children have the minibus as a key feature! It’s where a lot of the important chats, silly games and loud singing happens and can really be the heart of the project. Our drivers have the important responsibility of safely driving the minibus but they also offer an important presence to the children. As the children are not with them 24/7 (unlike their group leaders!), the drivers are often seen as an authority figure who can offer an air of calm organisation on the activity days. To apply, the next step is to complete our application form below and one of the team will be in touch! https://airtable.com/appNpmAkscPlOzyQb/pagPvprKO62jfHQjA/form Please note for project dates: We run our residential projects throughout the Easter and Summer school holidays. Each residential lasts 6 nights, 7 days, and volunteers are required to stay on-site for the duration.

Why these skills are required

We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, regardless of their previous experience working with young people. No special skillset is required; we recognise the value of a team consisting of different personalities and strengths. If you are an empathetic, patient and adaptable person you will fare well on our projects. Please note that we can only accept volunteers aged 18 or over. We especially encourage applications from those who represent the lived experiences of our children through their own lived experience or background.

What is in it for you

Food, board and activities during your time volunteering is covered by us. We also pay for all of our drivers to do their MiDAS training to make sure that they are completely comfortable driving the minibus before they come on project. Full safeguarding training (online) and induction training with team and other new volunteers (online) is also provided.

We ask that you commit to volunteering for a 7-day residential programme, where you will stay on site for the duration.
