Meeting and greeting visitors and selling gifts from our small museum shop
Dr Johnson’s House is a charming Georgian townhouse, nestled amongst a maze of courts and alleys in the historic City of London. Samuel Johnson, writer and wit, lived here in the mid-18th century, and compiled his great Dictionary of the English Language in the Garret. Today, the House is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, with collections relating to Johnson, restored interiors, and a research library. Front of House Volunteer Our Front of House Volunteers play a vital role in welcoming visitors to Dr Johnson’s House. The support you will give us as a volunteer is of huge benefit to the Museum, and in turn we aim to make sure that you enjoy a valuable and memorable experience. Activities To cover the Reception Desk/Shop for a morning or afternoon, once a week on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays from 11am - 2pm or 2pm – 5pm • Acting as a representative of the House at all times • Taking money for admission tickets and shop purchases • Ensuring the safety and security of our visitors and the collection • Chatting to visitors and answering general enquiries • Ensuring the shop and front desk are tidy and well stocked If you have previous experience in a public-facing role and an interest in the 18th century and Samuel Johnson, then we would love to hear from you!

Fluent in speaking English Reading and writing in English Ability to process sales and use a card machine. Ability to keep accurate written records. (Training will be given.)
As a Front of House Volunteer, you will be involved in meeting and greeting visitors at Dr Johnson’s House, an historic house museum. The role is suitable for people who enjoy retail work or would like to gain some experience in it. You do not need prior knowledge of the 18th century or Dr Johnson to enjoy this role. Training will be given in manual cash handling, hand written record keeping and using a PDQ machine for card sales.
To cover the Reception Desk/Shop for a morning or afternoon, once a week from either: 11am - 2pm or 2pm – 5pm

This area is well served by public transport. By Tube Chancery Lane (Central Line), Blackfriars and Temple (District and Circle Lines), or Farringdon (Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan, Circle Lines). By Bus To Fleet Street - 4, 11, 15, 23, 26, 76, 172 To Fetter Lane - 341 To Holborn Circus - 8, 25, 242, 45, 46, 17 By Train The nearest stations are City Thameslink, Blackfriars and Farringdon. By Car Dr Johnson's House is within the London Congestion Zone and there is limited parking in the area. Visitors wishing to drive should check the City of London parking webpages for up to date information.
