Treasurer - the treasurer is a trustee and acts as the chief financial offer.

Detailed Description

Overall • The Treasurer is a trustee of the Society who acts as the chief financial officer. • The role is subject to annual election by the AGM. • The role involves: o Overseeing the financial affairs of the Society and ensuring they comply with appropriate legal and regulatory requirements. o Ensuring proper financial records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place. o Monitoring the financial health of the Society and ensuring that its financial resources are utilised to meet its charitable objectives. o Producing and submitting financial reports and accounts to the trustees and the Charity Commission o Generally advising the trustees on financial matters affecting the Society. Specifically • Taking a lead in all aspects of the financial management of the Society and providing financial advice to the trustees. • Establishing financial procedures and controls to manage financial risk, including the establishment of policies for reserves, and investment of funds surplus to immediate requirements. • Establishing budgets for the Society and presenting these to the trustees. • Ensuring that there are proper financial records and that there is appropriate control of the Society’s assets. • Preparing and submitting periodic management accounts to the trustees covering the income, expenditure, assets and liabilities of the Society. • Preparing annual reports and financial statements for approval by the Trustees and submission to the Annual General Meeting and the Charity Commission. • Liaison with the Society’s external examiner and resolution of matters arising during the course of the independent examination • Monitoring the financial viability of the Society and advising the trustees. • Presenting the annual reports and accounts to the Society’s members at the Annual General Meeting and responding to any questions. • Assisting with the filing of the Society’s annual return with the Charity Commission. • Acting as the contact point with the Society’s insurers, checking the suitability of the insurance policy and ensuring the premium is paid. • With the Chair and Secretary, ensuring the Society complies with its constitution, charity law and any other relevant legal and regulatory obligations, including the identification and management of risk. • Being involved, with other trustees in recruitment and induction of new trustees. • To provide not less than 6 months’ notice of the intention to stand down as Treasurer except in the circumstances of serious ill-health.

The Treasurer will have the experience, background and personal qualities to: • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the Society and its objectives • Have or be willing to develop appropriate experience in charity financial management and regulatory reporting. (Induction and training can be offered). • Ideally have an appropriate financial qualification. • Communicate and explain financial information to the trustees and other stakeholders. • Command the respect of the trustees and be able to provide robust financial advice where necessary. • Work collaboratively and constructively with fellow trustees • Have sufficient time to be able to fulfil the role – estimated at approximately 150 hours a year.
