Are you passionate about helping others succeed through education? Are you interested in supporting refugee children in Orpington / St Mary Cray area? Refugee Education UK needs your help!
We are looking for five volunteers in the Orpington / St Mary Cray area to act as educational mentors to support young refugees and asylum-seeking children succeed in the local area. Educational mentors meet with their mentees once a week, in a public place, to help them with an agreed aspect of their education (mainly ESOL-related) for a minimum of six months. Mentors who apply to work with us go through an application process involving an interview, external references and a DBS check before they attend our mandatory training which covers child protection, boundaries, the asylum process, and how to structure mentoring sessions. We ask the mentor to start their mentoring session by 6:30 pm at the latest on a regular weekday or to meet on weekends and we ask both mentors and mentees to commit for at least 6 months. There is flexibility around this, based on agreed arrangements in the mentoring pair. If you have a specific subject specialism that would also like to support a mentee with, please let us know in the application.

1. Experience of working with young people and the related challenges (ie: flexibility and patience sometimes required for youth work). 2. Capacity to travel to a location convenient for the young person and an ability to meet the young person by 5:30 pm at the latest. 3. Experience of working with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures 4. Ability to work on own initiative and a willingness to take on relevant preparation 5. Ability to think creatively and problem-solve 6. Excellent communication/interpersonal skills 7. Good organisational skills 8. Ability to cope with emotionally-demanding and stressful situations 9. Motivated by promoting the wellbeing of children and young people 10. All new educational mentors will attend our New Mentor Training to get you ready for your matches. We also have quarterly mentor development trainings that provides opportunities for continued learning and connection among the mentoring hub. Past trainings have included topics on ESOL, boundaries, revision strategies and more. We run mentor and mentee socials throughout the year at our building and also in Central London, come join our growing REUK community!
Mentoring sessions will be 1-2 hours per week, for a minimum commitment of six months (flexibility available, please contact for more info).
