Stroke Survivors Groups Support Volunteer

Provide support at a weekly stroke survivors support group, from helping to set up the room, having a chat through to support running activities and joining in with outings. We deliver 4 stroke survivors group in Hackney where clients receive peer support, talks and activities on topics they choose and go on outings. Volunteers are invaluable in supporting our clients and staff, groups currently run on Mon, Tue, Wed and Fri, daytime.

Detailed Description

Make a difference in the lives of stroke survivors and gain valuable experience in the process. We run a range of different groups and volunteers can be allocated to one or more groups according to their area of interest, eg. high care groups, self-help group, group for younger stroke survivors (18-65yo), Talk Stroke group for people with communication difficulties, stroke forum, and more. We welcome all volunteers including peers/ people with lived experience. Provide support at a weekly stroke survivors support group, from helping to set up the room, having a chat through to support running activities and joining in with outings. We deliver 4 stroke survivors group in Hackney where clients receive peer support, talks and activities on topics they choose and go on outings. What skills are required for this role

Why these skills are required

We welcome volunteers with a positive, lively, creative and caring attitude who have an interest in helping stroke survivors with their recovery. You should have good communication skills, be enthusiastic and committed. We ask volunteers to commit for a period of at least 6 months and be able to give at least half a day per week of their time. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. We will also need you to provide relevant documentation to enable us to conduct a check with the Disclosure and Barring Service on your behalf. We actively encourage stroke survivors to apply and provide peer support to other stroke survivors. As a volunteer you may be asked to: * encourage members to take part in activities, in particular for those stroke survivors who have more challenges to participate; * engage members in group discussions; * help design activities and resources; * run activities during group sessions; * advise on healthy lifestyle; * help group members with refreshments; * help setting up venue; * join the group at outings in the community. Volunteers need enthusiasm and commitment. All our groups are in the Hackney area. Training will be provided. Groups currently take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoon or morning.
