Role Detail

Two Voluntary Trustee Roles at The Barnes Fund

The Barnes Fund

As a trustee you will oversee the charities’ work – including strategy, grant making, allocation of almshouse vacancies and the effective management of Walsingham Lodge, and finance and investments. All nine trustees are equally responsible for our grant making, Walsingham Lodge, and management of investments, but in order to manage our tasks efficiently, we have three committees that report to the Board: 1. Grant Making 2. Walsingham Lodge 3. Investments / freehold property

Detailed Description

Background The Barnes Fund is looking to recruit two new trustees to its Board. Each of the trustees we recruit will have shared as well as distinct requirements in their roles. Who we are The Barnes Fund is a local charity that does two things: 1. Makes grants to help those most in need in the Barnes community. 2. Provides, at Walsingham Lodge in central Barnes, a community comprising two types of sheltered housing – almshouses for those on low incomes; and also five leasehold bungalows. The board of trustees is made up of nine people, all of whom must live in Barnes.

Why these skills are required

Skills, knowledge and experience we are looking for ● Commitment to the organisation and its aims ● An understanding and appreciation of some of the challenges facing local residents and voluntary organisations supporting Barnes people, and an interest in improving people’s lives ● Approachability, impartiality, fairness and total discretion. Sometimes trustees have access to personal information and need to treat this entirely confidentially ● A commitment to rapidly understanding the governance, workings of a charity and role of a trustee is essential, though previous experience as a trustee or of working in a charity, voluntary organisation or social housing is not required: we value lived experience equally. ● Familiarity with basic IT as we share documents online; hold meetings on Microsoft Teams from time to time and correspond via email
