Detailed Description

Templar ward is a 32 bedded ward providing care for antenatal and postnatal patients and their new babies. Visiting hours for Templar ward are 8am-1pm and 3pm-8pm. Volunteers help with the general tidiness and appearance of the ward and offer vital additional help to patients, including assistance at mealtimes. By volunteering in this role, you will ensure patients have more help and midwives more time to care. As Templar ward is a busy environment, it is essential that volunteers are able to take a proactive approach to the role, whilst always being guided by the Midwife in Charge and wishes of the individual patient. Duties: 1. To check with the Midwife in Charge about the priorities for the shift and any issues the volunteer should be briefed about. 2. Taking trays of food to individual patients as directed by the Midwife in Charge. 3. Asking patients if they need help / responding to their requests such as making refreshments and refilling water jugs. To feedback any concerns to the named midwife as appropriate. 4. Assisting with making up beds. 5. Assisting with general ward tidiness / cleaning and labelling of equipment. 6. Chatting to patients if they would like company. 7. Putting together discharge packs and helping to ensure all new patients have received one. 8. Encouraging patients to give feedback on their experience of the ward by completing a friends and family survey on an ipad. 9. Assisting with packing up a patient’s belongings when the patient is ready to go home or is being transferred to another bed space.

Essential: o A commitment to improve the patient’s experience of their time in hospital o Well presented, with a friendly and approachable manner and good verbal communication skills o An ability to relate well to people on a one to one basis and be sympathetic to others’ situations o An ability to be patient and calm even in the face of difficult situations o An ability to act on own initiative within the role description o A willingness to be flexible and to follow the guidance of a Volunteer Supervisor o A commitment to the trust’s equal opportunities and diversity policies o Volunteers must adhere to the Homerton’s volunteer guidelines, including rules on confidentiality, health and safety, safeguarding adults and children and manual handling o To be willing to receive training in customer care, communication skills and any other areas as appropriate to the volunteer role
