Licensing team member volunteers
The Richmond Society
We need volunteers to help assess applications by premises for alcohol licenses. The majority of these premises are in the town centre and on the riverside.
Visitor have always liked visiting Richmond and its restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars which are also are popular with residents but Richmond is also a residential town. We need a balance between the interests of those who want to have a good time and those who need a good night’s sleep. The wide availability of alcohol, increasingly in shops, can and has led to increases in anti-social behavior so monitoring applications is key to achieving this balance. The work involves working with our trustee responsible for licensing to: 1. monitor all applications for new alcohol Licenses or amendments to existing ones in Central Richmond, 2. assess the risk of breach of four objectives which applicants must take into account: a. Prevention of crime and disorder b. Public safety c. Prevention of public nuisance d. Protection of children from harm 3. discuss with applicants or their agents the mitigation of those risks, and make representations to the Council in writing and orally at licensing hearings. The Society’s licensing team plays a major role in representing the valid interest of local residents and is supported by our Executive Committee.

Ideally have some experience in assessing applications (not necessarily licensing ones), considering the implications, and putting together a reasoned case. Induction will be given on the background including Richmond Council’s Cumulative Impact Zone and the Cumulative Impact Policy, relevant points of law and the four licensing areas of child safety, public nuisance, crime and disorder and public safety.
We believe the role will give you a sense of satisfaction, in particular offering an opportunity to: • Use and develop your experience and expertise for the benefit of the local community. • Build and develop a network with like-minded people.
A couple of hours a week on average with some flexibility of timing.
